Story of Valentine’s Day
Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest who also worked as a doctor. He lived in Italy in the third century AD and served as a priest in Rome
Valentine is famous for secretly marrying couples in love, but couldn’t get married because it was forbidden by Emperor Claudius II. Emperor Claudius forbade marriage when recruiting new soldiers for his army, thinking marriage would be an obstacle for those soldiers. He also wanted to prevent the current soldiers from getting married, thinking that marriage would be a hindrance for them and would distract them from their work.
Soldiers marry because he thought marriage would be a hindrance for them and distract them from their work.
When Emperor Claudius found out that Valentin had married couples, he sent Valentin to prison. Valentin used his time in prison to continue to reach out to people with love, saying that Jesus Christ gave his life on the cross for others.
Impressed by Valentine’s wisdom, he befriended the guardian Asterius. She asked Valentin to help her daughter Julia with her studies. Julia was blind and needed someone who could read her study material. He became friends with Julia through her work with him when Valentin visited her in prison.
Emperor Claudius also fell in love with Valentin. He offered to pardon Valentine and would set him free if Valentine gave up his Christian faith and agreed to worship the Roman gods. Not only did Valentine refuse to give up his faith, he also encouraged Emperor Claudius to believe in Jesus Christ. Valentine’s loyalty cost him his life. Emperor Claudius was very upset with Valentin’s decision and sentenced Valentin to death.
Before he was killed, Valentin wrote one last note to encourage Julia to stay close to Jesus and to thank him for being his friend. “From Valentin,” he signed the note. This note inspired people to start writing their own loving messages on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, which was celebrated as the day Valentine was martyred. Valentine was beaten, stoned, and beheaded on February 14, 270. Remembering his loving ministry to many young couples, people began to celebrate his life and ministry. He became a saint that God worked to miraculously help people. MRS. In 496, Pope Gelasius made February 14 his official feast day as Valentine’s Day.
